Beginners Guide to Riser Cleaning

The challenge

Extract Risers have always been notoriously difficult to access, inspect and maintain due to their positioning. Whether running centrally inside the building or located high on a wall outside, any form of work on these systems generally requires operating at heights and getting into areas which are not exactly easy to reach.

The need for effective cleaning

Problematic as access may be, thorough inspection, maintenance and cleaning of these systems is essential.

Under the 2019 TR19 Grease Extract Guidance issued by BESA, establishments must have their ENTIRE extract system cleaned from air to air, including all risers. Omitting the trickier-to-reach areas from the cleaning process simply is not an option and doing so could actually lead to insurance becoming null and void.

What is more, the fact that the risers are often positioned through a building where the floors above are busy offices or permanently-occupied accommodation makes their safe operation even more imperative.

The System Hygienics’ method to clean with confidence

At System Hygienics we have developed our own method of Hot Chemical Viscosity Riser Cleaning to provide our clients with complete peace of mind.

Firstly, the area where the riser is located is safely cordoned off then the cleaning solution – a specialised chemical dilution which can cut through even the toughest build-up of grease – is heated and pumped through the entire system.

The chemical is introduced to the riser discharge which is accessed via the roof or via a compactable lift where roof safety is an issue. It is forced down the riser, capturing and removing the grease from all internal surfaces as it goes, and the resulting waste solution (chemical plus grease) is extracted at the lowest point, then safely stored and removed from site.

The System Hygienics HCV Riser Cleaning process is not only highly efficient but is also convenient and cost-effective, eliminating the need for expensive scaffolding or abseiling. With this in mind it is not difficult to see why it is used extensively by restaurant and pub chains, shopping centres and commercial buildings across the UK.
