CVC Checklist

Fire Dampers:

Relevant Standards: DW/145: Installation of Fire and Smoke Dampers; DW/144: Sheet Metal Ductwork; TR/19®: Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation systems and TR19® Grease: Fire Risk Management of Grease Accumulation within Kitchen Extraction Systems. Reference should also be made to BS9999 and Heating and ventilation of health sector buildings (HTM 03-01) and Fire safety in the design of healthcare premises (HTM 05-02).

Compliance Check:

Checking the current and previous reports against above standards, ensuring that all the below is detailed if available:

Test results with client information including position within the building/system, and date.Name of operative recorded and any comments noted if further action is required.Asset register to include damper location and ID number.Inspection results including details of failed damper operation.If drawings are provided, update and annotate details.Digital photographic evidence of damper condition prior to and after testing procedures unless otherwise specified by client.Explanation of failed operation and recommended corrective or remedial action.Visual assessment of fire stopping integrity and/or damage observed to immediate area of fire damper.Damper fixing checked as far as is practicable to be in accordance with manufacturer specification, for example - drop rods fixed to securing lugs on damper frames / correct riveted fixing of duct to damper frames.Fire and Smoke damper closure correctly indicates on the relevant fire panel where applicable.

Competency:

Spot check against existing reports if applicable.Credentials of the company that completed works including the checking of competency and training.

If reports are not available then a visual survey of the building and report compiled to provide further information on the estimated amount and type of dampers on site.

Grease Extract Cleaning:

Relevant Standards: TR19 Fire Risk Management of Grease Accumulation within Kitchen Extraction Systems.

Compliance Check:

Checking the current and previous reports against above standards, ensuring that all the below is detailed if available:

An executive summary page that highlights the following key risks:A clear statement (yes or no) indicating whether or not the system was cleaned in its entirety.If no to the above question, state precisely what wasn’t cleaned and why not together with suggested solutions and recommendations.A recommendation of a new cleaning frequency based on the pre-clean Grease Thickness Test readings. In order to calculate a frequency based non keeping grease levels below 200 microns as a mean across the system, the rate of build-up of grease needs to be assumed to be linear over time and therefore the recommended new frequency can be calculated using Table 5 and the guidance in the notes to the predictive accumulation assessment table.Micron readings for the stipulated test locations. The mean (average) micron reading across all micron readings taken.Other hazards that have been identified.Pre agreement with a client of a specific section or area that is not to be cleaned.A sufficient number of photographs of the system taken before and after cleaning that are representative of the system condition. These should be as per system testing and more if the duct length exceeds 10m.)A schematic diagram or, as-installed drawing of the system layout showing the system in its entirety including known components, changes of direction, access panels, areas that have been cleaned and any areas that could not be cleaned.

Physical Testing:

WET FILM THICKNESS TEST (‘WFTT’)

Test at the time of survey of any extract and or risers on site along with a report. The Wet Film Thickness Test gauge (Toothed Comb) has become the industry standard for measuring surface grease contamination levels ranging between 25 and 3000 microns at variable increments. The objective is to determine a system mean and to establish any individual ‘high’ surface grease contamination levels.

Ventilation Cleaning and Air Monitoring:

Relevant Standards: TR19 Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems. *See appendix G TR19.

Compliance Check:

Checking the current and previous reports against above standards, ensuring that all the below is detailed if available:
On completion a comprehensive report should be provided. This should clearly state the following information:

The ventilation system(s) cleaned cleaning methods used.Verification results (if specified).Pre and post-clean photographic records.Any faults identified that could impact future hygiene.Additional works carried out (if any).COSHH data on any chemicals used for cleaning or biocidal treatment.Recommendations for future testing and cleaning requirements.

Physical Testing:

PREFERRED VACUUM TEST (‘PVT’)

This method requires on site sample collection and subsequent off-site laboratory analysis. it determines the mean deposit weight in grams per m2 and is suitable for circular, flat-oval and rectangular duct types. This method is recommended by BS En 15780 and applies to three cleanliness quality classes (for ventilation systems).

DEPOSIT THICKNESS TEST (‘DTT’)

Suitable for on site assessment and ventilation system survey reports for flat metal duct surfaces during risk assessment where immediate results are required.The dTT method determines the mean surface deposit in terms of micron thickness.Since the introduction of TR/17 in 1998, a result above 60μm has defined a cleaning requirement for supply and recirculation systems (180μm for extract systems). due to the introduction of cleanliness quality classes (for ventilation systems) within BS En 15780 the levels for dTT have been aligned with the British Standard.

Bacterial and Fungal Colonisation

Trafalgar Scientific paddle-dipslides (Product Code BTM2) are used to culture yeast/bacterial and mould/fungal growth. The dipslides contain: -

Triphenyltetrazolium Chloride (TTC) Agar to culture yeast/bacteria.Malt Extract Agar to culture mould/fungi.

Slides are incubated for 72 hours at high ambient temperature, approximately 30°C, in order to replicate worst-case typical sampling conditions and according to the manufacturers’ protocol. Following incubation, the growth on the slides is compared to the standard comparison chart.

Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

The regular sampling for gaseous contamination at a maximum of 30 no. locations per building, using standard re-agent techniques for the following gases:-

Carbon dioxide to 300ppm detection level.Carbon monoxide to 5ppm detection level.The measurement of temperature and relative humidity.

The production of a concise report detailing findings, results of sampling and complete with photographic / video evidence, and recommendations for any further action required in compliance with BESA TR/19
